Twenty-one medical practitioners who completed their studies at the University of The Gambia School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences have been sworn-in last week at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.
University of The Gambia vice chancellor Professor Faqir Muhammad Anjum congratulated the new medical doctors for their achievement.
Vice Chancellor Anjum stated that so far, the School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences has trained 247 doctors, majority of whom are now contributing to the country’s health care needs.
He disclosed that due to the increasing number of applicants for medical training, a state of the art academic complex, consisting of lecture rooms and office space will be constructed at EFSTH to help meet the growing demand.
Health minister, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh while underscoring the need for doctors to always apply mature attitude towards patience, reminded that such qualities are important in their day-to-day services to their patients. He also encouraged them not to let money come before practice.
Information minister Ebrima Sillah emphasised that the meager budgetary allocation to the country’s health sector has been hampering planning and implementation of projects, but thanked the School for providing the nation with quality doctors who have over the years been rendering nationwide services.
