Gambian teacher jailed in Senegal

Alagie S. Jallow, a Gambian teacher from Jahanka village in Central River Region (CRR), was arrested by Senegalese security patrol team on Gambian soil between Jahanka and Sare Kanimang in connection with possession of cannabis.

He was arrested sometime in April this year after a clash between the villagers of Jahanka and neighbouring villages in Casamance namely: Kerr Yoro, Kerr Saine and Kerr Jolie over land issues which led to the shooting of Ansumana Drammeh, an officer of The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services.

The principal of Jahanka Basic Cycle, Alhaji Fofana said on April 23, 2018, Mr. Jallow was heading to Jahanka from Sare Kanimang when he was stopped and questioned by a group of people who are thought to be from the three villages in Casamance discussing among themselves. The principal said, they asked him where he was from and he told them he was from Sare Madi; and then they asked what he was doing there because he is a Gambian and was not supposed to be there. On attempts to attack him, the Senegalese security patrol team arrived on the scene who rescued him from any imminent danger from the group.

However, according to the principal he was caught in possession of 250g of cannabis on Gambian land but was taken to Kolda.

“He was arrested and taken to Kolda around 6 p.m. and the following day he was sentenced for 2 years,” the principal said.

Asked if Mr. Jallow was given any assistance by him or the school administration, Fofana said, they were not given the chance as the whole process was done within 24 hours.

He said, the principal of Bansang Senior Secondary School, Ismaila Ceesay, visited Mr. Jallow in Kolda and spoke to the security personnel who told him that he should talk to their seniors at the ministry level and that if that happened he may be released.

He said they have touched on all avenues but his teacher is still languishing in jail. Fofana further said the police are aware as he visited the regional police headquarters in Janjanbureh and the deputy governor of CRR about the matter.

He said both the Foreign Ministry and Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) are also aware of the matter.

Fofana urged Gambian authorities to act swiftly so that Mr. Jallow can be repatriated back to his country of birth.

Gambian shot by Senegalese gendarme to appear in court

Gambian shot by Senegalese gendarme to appear in court

The Point Newspaper: Mar 11, 2020, 2:41 PM | Article By: Momodou Jawo

Sulayman Trawally, a native of Garawol Kuta village, Kantora District of the Upper River Region who was allegedly shot in the hand by a Senegalese gendarme on Saturday 7 March 2020 is set to appear before a Court in Tamba Counda, Senegal, The Point can confirm.

Binta Trawally, a sister to Sulayman who spoke to our reporter while in Tamba Counda, described her brother’s situation as “sad” and urged The Gambia government to do everything to facilitate his release. Trawally, who is married with three wives, was reportedly shot by a Senegalese gendarme after a rift ensued between them.

“When I arrived at the hospital, I found my brother in handcuff with three gendarmeries guarding him. Whatever he wants to do, the officers would be following him. The sad thing is that he was handcuffed in the hospital bed,” she told our reporter through a telephone interview yesterday.

Quizzed as to whether Sulayman Trawally had been charged at the time of her visit, she said the only thing the gendarme officers told her was that Trawally was a drug peddler and that they would jail him.

“In fact to my surprise, the officers said they were going to take him from the hospital while he is still in pain,” she stated. She added that “Sulayman Trawally in his hospital bed told me that the Senegalese officers wanted to jail him for no reasons whatsoever.”

Major Lamin K. Sanyang, the spokesperson of The Gambia Armed Forces confirmed the development to The Point, saying they rushed to the village for fact finding as soon as they got news but they did not meet their counterparts. He said they, however, talked to some villagers about the matter. He disclosed that the police and state intelligence service are following up the case.

A source familiar with the matter said the Gambian security is worried about the manner in which the Senegalese gendarmerie “illegally” entered Gambian territory and also the circumstance under which the issue had unfolded

Gambian kidnapped by Senegalese gendarmerie appears in court

The Point Newspaper:  Apr 3, 2020, 11:52 AM | Article By: Momodou Jawo

Sulayman Trawally, a native of Garawol Kuta village in the Kantora District of the Upper River Region, who was reportedly shot and kidnapped by the Senegalese gendarmerie, yesterday appeared in a court in Tamba Counda, south Senegal, The Point has been reliably informed.

The Senegalese gendarmerie last month reportedly entered Gambian territory illegally, opened fire in the village and allegedly shot Sulayman Trawally in his hand. Trawally, who is married with three wives, was detained in a prison in Tamba Counda, awaiting trial

Baba Seedy Trawally, a brother to Sulayman Trawally, who spoke to our reporter in an interview confirmed that his brother (Sulayman Trawally) was arranged in court on Wednesday, saying “one of my younger brothers in Tamba Counda was able to hire a lawyer for (Sulayman Trawally).”

The matter, he went on, has been adjourned to 8 April 2020. “What disappoints me more is the fact that since the incident happened, The Gambia government never issued any statement to condemn the illegal kidnapping of its citizen. I would have expected the government to work closely with their Senegalese counterpart to ensure the safe release of my brother.”

He added: “Even if he had committed serious crime and ran into the country, I thought the Senegalese gendarmerie should have followed the right protocol in arresting him. He didn’t commit any crime. He (Sulayman Trawally) was shot in our compound and the Senegalese gendarmerie in a convoy opened fire at our village, causing panic in the entire village,” he said.

It could be recalled that last month, Binta Trawally, a sister to Sulayman, who visited him at the hospital where he (Sulayman Trawally) was undergoing medical treatment, described her brother’s situation as “sad” and urged The Gambia government to do everything to facilitate his release.
