Scores arrested over gov’t food distribution in NBR

After President Adama Barrow launched his government’s ambitious covid-19 food aid initiative worth D734,25, 864 to help (84% of needy Gambian households), many anticipated transparency and probity in the manner the items would be distributed.
However, an uncalled for attitude has proven itself to be the order of day in the North Bank Region (NBR) during distribution as people tasked to render this sacred job were allegedly involved in dubious activities of selling some of these food items to shopkeepers. Scores of people distributing these items have been arrested and are currently being detained at Ndungo Kebbeh Police Station, a source familiar with the development told The Point. At least three people have been arrested in Ndungo Kebbeh over the matter.
The government intended to distribute 360,000 bags of 50kg of 100% broken rice, 50kg bags of sugar and 10 litre drums of refined cooking oil to needy Gambian citizens across the country, but this project is on the verge of collapse in the NBR as injustice has reared its ugly face in the distribution.
The Point has learned that those tasked to do this distribution in the NBR have decided to do things in their own ways by stealing some of these food items on the Barra-Farafenni Highway.
Our sources from both Jamagen and Ndungo Kebbeh villages have indicated that the suspects distributed 15 bags of rice in Ndungo Kebbeh and 25 in Jamagen village and sold the remaining items at a low cost of D800.
Our sources added that the residents of NBR felt so disgraced and worried and called on the authorities to act fast and make the suspects face a court law.
“They also applauded the government’s great gesture in helping the citizens in these trying times.”
The police spokesperson, ASP Lamin Njie said he was not aware of the arrest at the time of going to the press. “My government recognises that Gambians deserve an urgent national response to both the health and socio-economic crises resulting from losses in productivity and remittances to Gambian households,” Mr. Barrow said as he launched his government’s food aid project.
He added that they will ensure that support provided to all citizens, especially the vulnerable, is real in value.

Speaking to this medium, in Sabi village, in the Upper River Region (URR), a 26-year-old poultry farmer, Sulayman Camara, has ‘wholeheartedly’ expressed satisfaction with the high demand for his poultry products by consumers in his community and beyondAs a Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) mini grant beneficiary, Camara attributed his success to the timely grant support that he received from the National Cooperative Credit Union of The Gambia (NACCUG). He disclosed that the grant has enabled him to attract a lot of customers within his community (catchment area) and even those at the border between The Gambia and Senegal.
“In Sabi, we have a good market as the demand for chicken is very high,” the poultry farmer said. However, he admitted that they couldn’t even meet his community’s demand for chicken, much more those within the border areas.
It could be refreshed that Camara was supported by YEP in 2019 with 250 broiler birds, 20 bags of feed, 5 feeders, 6 drinkers and medication to expand his poultry farm.
Before he received any support, he started with 50 birds in 2016, which he then increased to 100 birds. Presently, he has about 500 birds in his poultry farm.
The young Sabi poultry farmer called on young people to venture into poultry as it creates many employment opportunities, especially in URR.
He encouraged: “I am not one of those poultry producers who face difficulties in marketing my poultry products. The edge I have over other producers is my business location, where the demand for poultry meat is very high. I cannot even meet my customers’ demand.” He extended sincere gratitude to YEP for enabling him to expand his business.

Darboe Calls For Calm- As Expelled MP Jawara Attacks UDP Leader

Darboe Calls For Calm- As Expelled MP Jawara Attacks UDP Leader

 By: Musa S. Sheriff
Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has called for calm among his families, relatives, friends and sympathisers and urged them to ignored profanity statements uttered by Hon Fatoumata Jawara, National Assembly Member (NAM) for Tallinding Constituency, during the President Adama Barrow’s Meet the People’s Tour held  at Tallinding, Buffer Zone.
Hon. Fatoumata Jawara, a former executive member of the UDP was recently expelled alongside seven other UDP National Assembly Members from the party and the Party claims that the eight NAM’s actions and behaviors are not in contravention with the party’s ideologies and mode of operation.
They were also accused of not attending the party’s meetings and function, a reason that UDP said warranted the dismissal of Jawara and co-lawmakers.
“I want to appeal to all the UDP members, Supporters, all my families and friends; please I’m appealing to you all to ignore the insults made by Fatoumata Jawara. I’m appealing to you all, please let no one reply or direct insults to Fatoumata Jawara”, Ousainou Darboe, UDP Leader appealed in a recorded audio that he urged his militants to distribute.
The insult launched by Hon. Fatoumata Jawara was made before The Gambian President, Adama Barrow at Tallinding, where she also said UDP militants must understand that her father was much better than Ousainou Darboe because he never smoke unlike UDP Party leader whom she described as an alcoholic.
“I sermon, Fatoumata Jawara to Allah our creator and to our Prophet (repeated three times), what they are accusing me of, such false accusations. For Fatoumata Jawara to make unfounded statements against me, a small child to insult me, whom Ya Adam my elder daughter, someone whom Numukunda (son) are older than to open up her mouth to insult me and people clapping for her, I sermon her to Allah,” Lawyer Ousainou Darboe cursed Tallinding Lawmaker.
Lawyer   Darboe warns that no militant or supporter of the United Democratic Party replied or direct insult Fatoumata Jawara, stressing that Allah will make a befitting judgment between him and Fatoumata Jawara.
While launching fresh attacks on the United Democratic Party leader and militants at the President’s Meet the People’s Tour, the expelled member for Tallinding Kunjang Constituency, Jawara insisted that she will not reply to the torrents of insults emanating from supporters and militants of the United Democratic Party, adding that she will rather direct her insults to their drunkard party leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe.
“If they (UDP Militants) insult me, my people always tell me not to reply them because they are not insulting me but the position that I hold. I want to tell you that I will not insult you but your leader.  You are insulting me on behalf of that wicked Alcohol drinker, who drank until his lips pilled-off, that drunkard whom we struggled alongside with is the one I will insult not you,” Hon. Fatoumata Jawara told a cheering crowd at the Buffer Zone.
She added: “What I want to tell you is that, the drunkard whom you are insulting me for, my father is better than him; my father live until he died he never smokes a cigarette. So if you are insulting me for the sake of that nonentity, that Alcohol drunkard I want to tell you that am ready for you and I want to assure Mr. President that this country is here for you.”
