The newly sworn-in nominated Member of Parliament, Foday Gassama has told journalists that he would serve the interest of the nation and not President Adama Barrow.
Gassama, sworn-in Monday morning, was picked by President Barrow to replace Ya Kumba Jaiteh whose nomination was revoked last month. Jaiteh is challenging the decision at the Supreme Court where her lawyers launched an unsuccessful effort to stop Gassama’s nomination. However, a case challenging the constitutionality of the president’s decision to revoke her nomination is still before the apex court.
Immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, Gassama, a former United Democratic Party regional chairman for Westcoast Region, told waiting journalists that his “primary responsibility in the house is to defend and serve the interest of The Gambian people, not President Adama Barrow.”
He promised to deliver to the expectations required of him in defending the interest of Gambians.
Welcoming him to the legislature, Mariam Jack Denton, the Speaker of the National Assembly assured Gassama of the parliament’s readiness to give him support.
“We will provide you with all the necessary support in order for you to carry out your job diligently and effectively and on behalf of the National Assembly, we warmly welcome you to this August body.”
Gassama’s swearing-in ceremony was presided over by the Clerk of the National Assembly.
